Right to sunlight - shading of solar collectors

I am writing to offer a word of caution to people

contemplating the installation of solar electric panels or

solar hot water systems in relation to the right to sunlight.

My recent experience concerning DA- 94 / 2010 - Development

Application with Hornsby Concil suggests that little

protection exists to prevent shadowing by adjacent buildings

on such solar collectors.

In persuit of my desire for a sustainable dwelling I attended

Hornsby council workshops regarding the installation of solar

electric grid connect systems and obtained a grant from the

Federal government to install such a system. It now appears

that having invested a considerable amount of my own money

(as well as Federal Government funding), I find that

shadowing from the recently approved DA will adversely impact

the performance of my new system during the winter months.

This combind with the impact on the existing passive solar

design of my dwelling sets me back with respect to my goal of

achieving a lower carbon footprint. As far as I am aware I

have little recourse against this approved application. It

appears that although all levels of government encourage

sustainable energy, no legislation exists to protect against

shadowing of solar collectors.

Solar Generator. Is it Environmental friendly?

Solar Generator, Is it environmental friendly equipment?
Ideal for camping or emergency power outages, the
Sun Power Port is a portable generator that when used
to its full potential will pay for itself in less than two

years.
In one day of full sunshine, the solar panel easily charges
the 12 volt (standard automobile) battery. An inverter
changes the DC current to AC. From there the electrical energy
is easily accessible to most standard 110 volt small
appliances used in North America. What are the advantages of

a solar generator? If you don't know, check out

sunpowerport.com. The featured generator will run most small

electrical appliances. It is great for camping or emergency

backup. No noise. No fumes. www.sunpowerport.com

Reimbursement for Solar Energy

I've been thinking this for quite a long time now, since the late 90's.

We had a friend who ran his entire house on Solar Energy, it was fantastic, reliable, and he always had a backup generator, which he used 5 times in a 6 year lifespan of his house (he then moved on)

Now that the state of the world is finally becoming a priority of mainstream society, why don't the Government do something to promote not only alternate energies, but a way to cut down our emissions

SOLAR POWER

All new houses get an option of standard power or can opt to have solar power installed at their homes. For taking the solar power option, you get a reimbursement to help with the costs

For the number of new houses that go up every year, I'm quite sure a number of them would take that option. Look how many people took advantage of the LPG conversions once the reimbusement was introduced

When the Powers to be decided to Dam the Gordon River in Tasmania there was a major influx of Protesters here on this Island from Many parts of the Globe to stop the Destruction of this wild and beautiful River,my Question is,why is there not so many now protesting against the Gunns Pulp Mill now,do you think the Gordon River area will be safe from modern day logging?you had the Power to stop the Dam,so why was not the effort put into saving all Of Tasmania from this corporate rape of this state, and any other part of this country they can turn into cash,it is amazing just who has bee bought off over this Pulp Mill Disaster, for that is what it will be,another disaster, like the Burnie Mill,no Pollution eh?bit late to find out they lied about that when the Mill is up and running and killing more than we anticipated, not hard to see who owns this state, definatly not the people, why do we even bother voting as our majority vote always loses anyway, more so when Puppets like Garrett are in charge, now there is a man who should be boiled in his own Midnight Oil,a Traitor to his own Promises, but just another suit now.
So where were all the Protesters when we needed them,I think this Island is more important than one River.

I Still Love this Sunburnt Country by R.M.Brown.
I still Love this Sunburnt Country, with its Mountains and far distant Plains
but I cant stand our Minister of the Enviroment, and his very decieving games
he won our Faith in the songs that he did sing about saving our Enviroment
but what he did sing and what he did do,he conned us all,in every extent.

So now we have Gunns to tear up our lands of old and re-plant to Plantations
all because of Greed of Gunns, and the profitable gains from other Nations
and who do we have to thank for this Mill of Destruction in our Pristene Land
why Mr Garret of course, with his sly wordings and a Traitors course well planned.

Good on ya Garrett, you have ruined the lives of many who did dream and Toil
all of this Sorrow and grief, all because of a burnt out Rock Singer from Midnight Oil
we have all learnt from this,we trusted to quick, for we care for our Land and Life
now we have to contend with destruction,Log Trucks, and all related strife.

Yes I still Love this Sun burnt Country, where the Bush has been turned into Plains
where a lot of our once Beautiful Rivers and creeks, are just nothing but Drains
the country layed waste to the Contractors will to clear and fell,to clear and fell
we all know what is going to happen, but some will not listen, they are to Ignorant to tell
Thank You Mr Garrett, for turning this Island into a Political and Enviromenta

Greenpeace are probably one of the most known, Greenie's group in the world. There have been great tales of bravery, and courage from the people in Greenpeace, whether there tiny little dingies, braving the huge Japanese Whaling ships, or the members protecting forests from bulldozers.
Their Homepage - www.greenpeace.org/
The video that all meat-eaters should watch and every vegetarian should own, "Meet Your Meat", narrated by Alec Baldwin, covers each stage of life of animals raised for food.
I could not even watch all of this - so what are your thoughts? Should we eat meat? Should all humans be vegetarians?

Organic Fruit and Veg

I am not sure about the rest of you but I do regularly buy organic fruit and vegetables - Yes they are much more expensive and often they do have bugs and things in them but they do taste SO much better than the nutrionally negative super market varieties

Well - today I went to my favourite organic store in order to buy organic blueberries - now they are exhorbitantly expensive but they are so damn good they are almost worth - however, throughout the berry season they have been getting steadily more expensive - TODAY THEY WERE $8 for what equates to maybe three mouthfuls

I was literally annoyed by this - this is just obscene - I did not buy them even though I desperately wanted them and it is not about the extra $2 they had increased in price -

It is just the principle of the thing - I am not going to pay $8 for a handful of blueberries

So I put it to you - do you think Organic is used as a bit of license to charge exhorbitantly for fruit and vegetables ??

My feeling is that governments will never deliver any real change - they like to talk a lot of PR crap but they do not really act fast enough to cause the required cultural shift - this only happens when private sector investment is involved
Also government projects will be rife with corruption and wasted expense -

The question is will goverments lead? So far the big governments are not showing a good example to the rest of the world

Last night I was watching American Chopper - yes even I the feared Green Hornet watch stupid Amercian TV - in this specific epsiode they all go camping on heaps of free camping equipment they get for sprooking some big US camping gear store

So they set up camp and as they are prone to do they decide to throw stuff into their outrageously large fire - So Paul jr. throws a full bottle of charcoal light fluid into the fire - the ligher fluid comes in a plastic bottle - and very uncharacteristically they cut it so you could not see the bottle go up in toxic flames

I thought two things:

1) They don't want children to imitate this
2) How can they cause so much toxic smoke in the name of entertainment

I hate to say it but even stupid shows like American Chopper should be creating a positive environmental example

In my job, I come across some interesting social campaigns. Here is one that I think most of you might find worthwhile spending two or three of your hard-earned mouse-clicks on.

Absolut (yes the vodka people) are running a global campaign that’s ‘challenging the status quo’ by presenting thought provoking visions of life in “An Absolut World”.

They showcase five 'visions', and whichever is voted for the most, they will make come true mid-2008.

Don’t know about you guys but it took me about 30 seconds and I knew which vision was most important to me: To protect and nurture whales, even if it means protecting them from ourselves.

Believe it or not, this vision is the LEAST voted for so far.
If anyone wants to chip in their vote, let’s support these majestic creatures www.inanabsolutworld.com.au/

Alternate Energy - Geo-thermal

 Hey,

one big thing going on in the world lately is people asking about 'alternate energy' whether it be solar power, wind power, or the oh so controversial nuclear power (in aus).

One type i know about and i know many people that have never heard of it is Geo-thermal power. Now forgive me if things have changed greatly in the past 6 months and this technology is now useless.

For those who don't who what it is, basically we need heat to heat water to make steam to spin turbines to make electricity. What Geo-thermal basically does is you dig a pipe maybe a couple of km's deep into the ground, and pump water down. In this case the heat from the earth turns water into steam which comes back up and spins turbines.

Now i don't consider myself a scientist, but i see this to be the most flawless system there is. It's 100% renewable, the earth is always hot, and is perfectly clean.

Are there any downsides to this that i don't know about? If not i hope to see more of it, unless there already is and i haven't noticed

Sea Shepherd vs Green Peace

Lately there have been heaps criticisms against Green Peace for accepting tons of donations and not doing anything with its donations. I believe their 2008 anti-whaling protest is now finished, and they are going to return to New Zealand... I mean the whaling season doesn't stop when you want to go home, it lasts until March.

Sea Shepherd, which I am a firm supporter of, actually have the balls to standup to the whaling fleet, and give a damn about what's happening with the poor creatures, and Green Peace won't work with Sea Shepherd. I think that's totally bullocks, the whaling fleet should be sunk, and those inflatable rafts green peace deploys should be sunk, and let the real protest take action.
What do you think?

Just thought I'd throw this one down on the table for discussion since its kinda relevant to all the various different opinions out there on the topics we discuss.

Can it be used as a legit source of info? Can you trust it?
That's my question.
I was talking about this the other night with someone and we were thinking along the lines of if you have both sides of the argument putting info into the same place, surely facts do eventually match up and from that you have an unbiased article. While phrasing and all that can go a long way to tampering with it, on a pure facts and figures level, does this method bring concrete facts?

Green Insurance

I just saw a TV commercial on Discovery channel - it featured Ranger Stacey from "Totally Wild" - she tells us that 34% of all green house emissions come from private vehicle use - therefore we should sign up to Green Insurance which offsets the carbon dioxide that we create by using our cars

she then directs us to www.greeninsurance.com.au (link purposely not made active)

I will now go to this link and do some research for the group

Large Hadron Collider

Does anyone know much about the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)?

I only recently read up about it and I've become increasingly interested in it, especially after seeing The Mist (movie about another dimension...typical Stephen King).

en.wikipedia.org/

There's some info on it. Wikipedia isn't the best place for info but I've looked it up at a lot of places and that's pretty accurate. It's really interesting if you're into that sort of stuff.

When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and 'missing links' in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass.

It's very exciting if you ask me. It could even lead to the end of the universe though, which is kind of scary...
